Gunship

Gunship Gunship
Developer: N/AGraphics:
Publisher: MicroProseSound:
Year: 1989Difficulty:
Genre: Simulation/ActionReplay value:
Number of players: 1My overall rating: 8/10

Late adaptation of a Commodore C64 (1986) figurehead and a benchmark for helicopter simulation that combines action and realism.

You are given an Apache AH-64 (known as the best Fighting helicopter, I haven't checked) and you must complete various missions around the world.
The difficulty is configurable as a number of things like controls realism, landing difficulty, weather and enemies reactivity.
Rare enough to be reported, the presence of a training mode (tutorial). The manual study is still required because there are so many functions to assimilate. It is also quite possible to share the controls for 2 players: one pilot while the other one lets the weapons talk.

The game offers to follow a full military career through a hundred of missions (randomly generated!), punctuated by promotions that you will gradually raise you to the rank of Colonel.

We regret that there is no significant change compared to the Atari ST version, released 3 years earlier. Small mistake repaired later with Gunship 2000, more worthy of a Amiga capacities. I wonder if MicroProse's flight simulator doesn't owe part of its success to Airwolf, broadcasted at about the same time on TV. . . .
