Lemmings is a beautiful puzzle game, superbly realized.
Take a bunch of daft rodents, always walking straight ahead, regardless of traps, cliffs or lava lakes. Put them in hostile environments, to say the least.
Since they're too stupid to get out on their own, you'll give them orders: "prevents your comrades from moving", "build a stairs", "dig up". . . .
It is so gratifying to see them reach the exit safely, thanks to your brilliant strategies! And so upsetting to see them all crash to their death as a result of an unfortunate little miscalculation. . . .
Their survival depends on you! And the steady difficulty curve makes this game accessible to everyone. Right mom?
Some levels of Lemmings are directly derived from Amiga games: one finds a nod to Menace, Awesome and Shadow of the Beast.
There is also a two-player mode (simultaneously) which will not concern many people. I think it requires two mouse.
