Amiga, what's that?

Actually, I could spread pages on Boulderdash or Moonstone, but when it comes to describing the machine's technical characteristics and its history, the limit of my knowledge is quickely reached. . . .

So I'll begin with a brief definition of the Amiga found on the net:

"Game-oriented computer, formerly manufactured by Commodore, which had itself acquired the company "Amiga". Through serious coprocessors and a good operating system (multitasks), it was a good machine, which was for a long time in competition with Atari, until Commodore bankrupted.
Supported by the users (many fan sites on the net) and independent companies, the Amiga has evolved and many machines are now installed in towers and equipped with graphic and accelerator cards equipped with PowerPC (like the iMac). Many high quality softwares are still developed."

If an inspired visitor wants to write a short article on the Amiga, or one of its games, the forum is open.

A word on emulation. . . .

Games immortalized here will probably recall some good memories. But do you know that it is possible to replay these wonders on your current machine?

Yes ma'am, with a software to simulate an Amiga (an emulator), such as WinUAE. You'll also need virtual disks of your favorite games (.adf or. ipf files, sometimes called "ROMs" wrongly or rightly, I am no linguist nor a computer specialist).

Here's a quick guide for newbies:

Second step: games!
Under each page, you will find at least one link to a site where you can download the game. Just click on it! And if the link does not work or if the game isn't there, please inform me on the forum.

The original is better.

You can read here and there that some games are ports. That is to say that originally they were developed for other platforms (arcade machines, consoles . . .) and then adapted for the Amiga with varying degrees of success. It is advisable in some cases to choose the original version. You should find emulators and ROMs corresponding to the machine that you're looking for on this page.

For arcade games, I recommend the Mame emulator:

WinUAE and hard drive.

One step further. Installing your games on an emulated hard drive is handy. You won't bother swapping disks anymore and loading times will be shorter. However, the procedure is quite complicated, especially if (like me) your use of the Amiga is limited to putting a disk into the slot to run a game
It's interesting if you play with the emulator frequently or if you like adventure games spread over 3 to 15 floppies.

Read this guide for more information. Minimum computer skills are required. Knowing how to use WinUAE may be usefull too.

Now, just as an indication, and to make my audiance laugh, I give you my favorite Amiga games hit parade!
Nothing objective here. Actually . . . if I kept only affective criterias, Cruncher Factory and Vixen would come 2nd and 3rd (and Swooper right next to them, probably).
