Every PET is customized by a "navi", a virtual character with whom we can talk. These navis are evolving on the internet, guided by their operators. Lan's navi is called MegaMan.EXE.
Like technology, cyber-crime has skyrocketed and the net is regularly a target for viruses that attack reckless navis or programs whose purpose is to regulate electronic systems (traffic lights for example). These attacks can have devastating repercussions.
To counter this threat, authorities call "Net Battlers", people equipped with elite navis, programmed to fight against viruses.
Today, virus hunting has become so crucial it is taught in schools and every kid dreams of becoming a Net Battler. . . .
A few characters:

Lan Hikari, the hero of this story, mediocre student except when it comes to battling viruses. On the right, his virtual brother Mega Man.EXE, mister "nice guy" and sermonizer.
Mayl, Lan's girlfriend (the stuck up) and her digital friend: Roll.EXE (the dumb blonde).

Dex, Lan's best friend and his navi GutsMan.EXE. Two bullies with no special talent.
Yai, rich girl who likes to give his opinion on everything and Glide.EXE, her butler-navi.

Chaud, a pretentious Net Battler as sociable as an ice block and his navi: ProtoMan.EXE.
Higsby, a half-wit who lives only to collect battlechips and his virtual alter-ego: NumberMan.EXE.

All in all, this is a pretty nice RPG, probably intended for a younger audience, with an original battle system.
There is also an anime adapted from the game, the episodes are of uneven quality, but the begining is watchable.
