The classic series opposes Mega Man to Dr. Wily, a mad scientist determined to conquer the world with his army of robots. . . .
Some key characters (in brackets their name in the Japanese version):
Dr. Thomas Light (Dr. Thomas Right)
Scientist known for his robotic creations, he despises all forms of violence and sees Mega Man as his son.
Dr. Albert Wily
Former assistant of Dr. Light, he then turned against him, re-programming his robots for evil purposes.
Proto Man (Blues)
First new generation robot designed by Light and Wily, he disappeared soon after. He appears in Mega Man 3 as "Break Man". He is a loner, he turns up on rare occasions to give a hand to Mega Man.
Rock also known as Mega Man (Rockman)
Robot created by Wily and Light when they worked together. Endowed with a great sense of justice, though he was primarily designed to help both scientists with their experiments, he was later turned into a combat robot by Light and renamed Mega Man when Wily proved dangerous. His plasma cannon grafted to his arm allows him to "copy" the weapon of a defeated robot master.
Roll
Rock' sister. She helps Dr. Light in household tasks.
Rush
Light has created this robotic dog to assist Mega Man in his missions. Appears in Mega Man 3.

Eddy aka "Flip Top"
Another creation of Dr. Light, Eddie is a suitcase on legs that carries power-ups for Mega Man. Appears in the 4th installment.

Beat
A mechanical bird designed by Dr. Cossack and given to Rock in Mega Man 5.
Bass (Forte)
Created by Wily to counter Mega Man, Bass has one obsession: to prove he is the strongest. But his competitive spirit makes him rather uncontrollable. We see him for the first time in Mega Man 7 with his partner, Treble.
Treble (Gospel)
Wily built Bass on the model of Mega Man and Rush, so he accompanied him with a dog teammate as well.
