Remember Ghosts'n Goblins? and that filthy red flying gargoyle who harassed you? Well, this is him, Firebrand, who's the hero of a derivative game series (spin off), introduced on Game Boy. A sequel was released in 1992 on Nes: Gargoyle's Quest II: The Demon Darkness (which takes place several centuries earlier, through events mentioned in the beginning of the first installment), and then on Supernes with Demon's Crest (1994).
The story of this Gargoyle's Quest depicts the second invasion of the ghouls world by a demon army. A legend says that long ago, a hero named "Red Blaze" has managed to save everyone, and they send you to fetch him, naturally. . . .
The game is divided into two parts. First, an exploration phase, seen from above, with villages to visit, some dialogues and entry points to the dungeons. By this means, or by random encounters, you are thrown into the heart of the matter, namely the fighting. The view is then put "on the side", like a classic platform game.
Our gargoyle's abilities are quite original: Firebrand can jump, hover on short distances, cling to walls and spit projectiles at his enemies. And, as in a RPG, his powers increase steadily during his adventure.
This game is particularly well done. The levels are challenging without being annoying. Through random battles, you can pick up as many vials as you need and use them to buy extra lives. Furthermore, a password is given in every village to resume your game.
This whole series is distinguished, finally, by a sublime soundtrack.
