The Black Company
The chronicles of a company of mercenaries in a fantasy world torn by wizards wars. . . .
Much of the story is told by the chronicler of the company, or occasionally by other characters in the form of a diary. This means that you will see virtually no description of characters. We found for example in volume 2 or 3 the age of the captain and that's about all we learn about him. It's difficult to get into the novel because of that.
Now I am completely addicted to this series but I can not explain why!
Objectively, nothing happens. There is almost no dialogue. The battles are described briefly and after-the-fact, since it is a logbook. We know almost nothing about the characters, neither their names nor what they look like.
With a very cynical tone, the narrator informs us of his cases of conscience. The style is very concise and very dark.
If the way in which the story is told is original, the characters themselves are human. They are gnawed by doubt, tired, dirty, mean. Each of them can be killed at any moment. One wonders, however, if the author knows where he wants to take us.
Fancy that uh?
