A brilliant mathematician, Hari Seldon has developed a revolutionary science called "psychohistory" which can foresee in its broad outlines the future of humanity.

And what he is prediscting is not good . . . The Galactic Empire, however prosperous for centuries, will collapse. A long period of darkness will follow in which humanity will gradually lose its technology and will engage in endless wars to compete for leftovers.

It is too late to prevent the fall of the Empire. Seldon knows that. All he can do is shorten this period of barbarism in preparing a plan over several centuries. He decides to bring together the knowledge of mankind in an encyclopedia and settle with a handful of scientists on a remote planet to build his foundation. It is said that there will be a second foundation, somewhere, "on the other end of the galaxy". . . .

The Foundation saga spans over several centuries. It depicts the fall of the Empire and the organization of a new core destined to become, much later, a new Galactic Empire, if the Seldon plan works for that long. . . .

A fascinating series narrated like a historical fresco. The characters are rather dull, however.
