Le Trône de fer is an extremely rich fantasy saga. In a fictitious world inspired by medieval Europe (War of the Roses), different families compete for power. The reader is drawn into the intrigues of court, jousting knights, wars of succession. . . .

Unlike most fantasy books, magic, traditional dragons, although they are present, are sidelined. What we are concerned about is the balance of power between factions, politics, underhands, betrayals. In each chapter, the narrator focuses on a main character among a dozen, good or bad, most often between the two. The tone changes and events are reviewed from different angles.

What is the strength of this series, is the characters' personality, the multitude of small stories that blend together to give life to a complex background. You can read these books several times and still discover details you had missed. The character we got attached to can die suddenly from one page to another. It's big, it's clever, a brillant tale for adults.
