Let me introduce you to Aladdin, the newest member of the apple-throwing gang…
Arriving two years after the release of Disney’s movie, and a year after the Sega Genesis version, on which it is based, this Amiga version nevertheless met expectations. Graphically, it’s well above average, beautifully animated, and even manages to surpass its original in terms of music and sound. However, there’s a catch: although the two-button controller is supported (the “joypad throw” option), jumping still requires pressing up—hardly an insignificant detail, considering that a combination of keys, originally intended for jumping higher on “trampolines” and reaching secret areas, is impossible to reproduce on the Amiga. For this reason, I’d recommend sticking with the Sega Genesis version.
Note that a very different adaptation appeared on the Super Nintendo. Aladdin no longer carries a sword, and the gameplay focuses more on acrobatics than combat. This version is certainly less pleasing to the eye and more conventional, but perhaps more dynamic as well. I’ll admit, I’m a bit biased the moment I see the Capcom logo…
