You play as a scientist who, during an experiment gone wrong, finds himself thrown into another dimension, inhabited by hungry monsters…
It kicks off fast. After a stunning animated introduction, you’re materialised, somehow, at the bottom of a lake. No time for sightseeing, as immediately, a thousand dangers fall upon you: carnivorous plants, ferocious beasts, pesky aliens…
Another World (also known as Out of this World) unfolds as a series of trials combining both puzzle-solving and quick reflexes. If you fail, you die and start over from the last checkpoint. The game is short and linear, but paced well enough to make you keep going, despite the constant and unexpected deaths.
The main strength of Another World is its unique atmosphere, created through cold, minimalist science-fiction landscapes and constant animation. The polygon-based graphics have aged a bit, but they have the advantage of taking up relatively little space (the game fits on two floppy disks). It’s worth noting that the realism of certain scenes was made possible thanks to the rotoscoping technique, which involved filming real models, just like in Prince of Persia.
A remaster was released in 2013.
