An essential game, both accessible and incredibly rich, released in AGA version a year later, featuring improved graphics. The images above are from that version (impressive, right?).

In short, you choose a civilisation from a wide range and guide it from the Stone Age all the way to space exploration. It’s up to you to found and manage entire cities, trade or wage war with your neighbours, discover new technologies—but don’t forget to look after your people’s well-being, or they’ll stop following you.

The game is turn-based, against one or more enemy civilisations controlled by the computer. Say goodbye to your friends, your wife, your dog, and abandon any hope of a professional or social life before diving into this. After all, world domination requires at least a little of your attention.

For those struggling with the somewhat austere nature of an old strategy game, its four floppy disks, and its loading times, you’ll also find plenty of updated versions on PC.
