After two abominations, they finally decided to deliver a game worth its salt!
The pitch: you participate in wild races across the United States, driving a Lamborghini Diablo. Place bets with some of your rivals, win races, and you’ll start making some cash. This little nest egg will help you pay off your fines, fix your junker, and deck it out with shiny new toys, like a radar detector or a nitro turbo. Climb the ranks and you might even get a shot at a spot in the higher division (you start in Division Four).
While it doesn’t exactly reinvent the genre on a technical level, this big brother of Need for Speed stands out thanks to its unique atmosphere. You can spot it from the very opening scene and throughout the different sequences that make you feel like you’re managing a real racing career. Progressing through a (clandestine) championship, the lure of money, rivalry with other racers, the garage to upgrade your car, the bets, the police involvement, the weather conditions … all the cherries on an already appetising cake.
On the downside, no two-player mode, which is enough to spark an outrage…
Hallelujah! It’ll be released the following year, under the title Lamborghini American Challenge, and complete with a two-player mode!
