There are several clones of Defender on the Amiga. This one is supposedly the closest to the original (arcade, 1980).
The premise is to protect astronauts during a UFO invasion. All alone, aboard your ship, you must shoot down waves of aliens, rescue the humanoids being abducted by shooting at the saucer before it reaches the edge of the screen, and then catch the passenger mid-air. Meanwhile, avoid all the flashing objects that attack from all sides.
The world, viewed from the side, scrolls horizontally and freely. You can turn around or even hover in place (and reduce your life expectancy to five seconds). Finally, a small radar (a trademark of Defender) shows the position of all enemies and astronauts in real time.
It’s a very difficult game that demands quick reflexes and precision. I got kicked out of both classes…
On the title screen, don’t click with the mouse (it will exit the game). Press the joystick button instead.
Its sequel, Defender 2 aka Stargate, was released in 1981 on arcade and was later loosely adapted for the Amiga by Llamasoft (1990).
