Globdule is a pink blob (sorry, a Splatform™) dreaming of becoming a toy. To fulfil this lofty ambition, it embarks on an epic journey from its remote basement to the grand toy manufacturer’s store…

The character sticks to walls, allowing it to climb effortlessly and scuttle across ceilings. Levels are made up of networks of caves (some partially flooded), populated by the usual unfriendly menagerie and riddled with sharp, burning hazards. These areas are also, above all, packed with hundreds of multicoloured bonuses to collect, bouncing from one surface to another. Your trajectory is even influenced by the slope of these surfaces, turning the whole exercise into something resembling a game of billiards. That’s the game’s sole hook: indulging your compulsive need to collect.

Once you’ve stripped the region of its crystals, stars, fruits, and other sugary prizes, you’ll need to exit via the end-of-level door. To do so, you’ll have to perform this arcane ritual (it took me 15 minutes to figure it out): “push the joystick down while pressing the button”. Additionally, the ability to jump in eight directions forced the programmer to abandon the (Amiga) convention of using “up” for jumping.

The atmosphere is sure to charm younger players. The visuals are cute and colourful, and the music is surprisingly varied and engaging. Bonus points for including passwords and ditching any time limits.

You know what it reminds me of? That scene in A Clockwork Orange with the eyelid clamps.

“Stop it! Stop it please! I beg you!”
