North and South (or Nord et Sud) is a humorous wargame based on the comic strip Les Tuniques Bleues (for the uninitiated, it’s set during the American Civil War).
At first, you move your troops around on a map. If two armies land in the same area, they clash. You can also attack supply trains or enemy forts, leading to some rather enjoyable mini-games, though completely unplayable if you ask me.
The most fun part is the battle phases: set in a cartoonish atmosphere, you control different unit groups (artillery, cavalry, and infantry) in real time, each with their own movement style (artillery moves sideways and fires from a distance; cavalry sticks to hand-to-hand combat, never retreating; and infantry sacrifices some speed for mobility). Plus, an unexpected event might spice things up (storm, Indians).
You can play simultaneously with two players, which really multiplies the fun.
