Cultural point! The Red Baron is a historical figure: Manfred Albrecht, the ace of aces in German aviation during the First World War. His feats have inspired countless filmmakers, and even a few video game developers…

This is the adaptation of a flagship title from the PC library, a flight simulator set, as you’ve probably guessed, in the Great War. You play as either a British or German pilot, build your career, complete missions, and shoot down other planes with a machine gun. Classic. However, it’s worth noting the tremendous amount of research (historical references) and realism (weather effects, instrument fallibility, use of the rudder…).

So here’s the problem: I’m utterly incompetent when it comes to evaluating a flight simulator, even one decorated with period photos. As soon as it takes more than five keys to control a plane, my brain just shuts down. I tried simplifying the settings, but that doesn’t turn Red Baron into an arcade game…

According to most articles from the time, this game suffered from significant slowdowns on the Amiga 500. Poor optimization? On a well-configured emulator, no issues. Still, you might be better off downloading the original version.
