It’s quite a bold move on the part of the developers to create this avant-garde game while they were still exploiting a “safe” commercial licence (well, until the film came out…). It’s a series of 3D arcade games (car patrol, first-person shooting, close combat, mini flight simulator, when Robocop dons his jetpack), linked together by narrative scenes (including the iconic Mediabreak news broadcast).
The title made a lot of noise at the time for the quality of its production and its 3D engine. It could be seen as a concept game, technically quite interesting (a sort of precursor to GTA 3, Doom, and Virtua Cop), but not all that fun to play. It’s the kind of game you’d bring out to impress your friends. Now, it’s more of a historical curiosity. Personally, I don’t feel nostalgic for that era of 3D experimentation.
In any case, the film’s atmosphere is well captured, though I’m not sure whether that’s a good or bad thing…
Robocop 3 is one of the few Amiga games to use a dongle as anti-piracy protection, a sort of key that you plugged into the second controller port, and without which the game wouldn’t launch. That didn’t stop it from being cracked on release.
