This very simple and dynamic “wireframe” 3D arcade game must have made quite an impact back in 1983. It features three key scenes from the movie, at the time of the final assault on the Death Star. The first level puts you in control of an X-wing fighter, facing off against Imperial shuttles, with the Death Star clearly visible in the background. In level two, you dive towards the base, attack surface turrets, and then find yourself, just like at the end of the film, in the famous trench, weaving through obstacles at top speed, waiting for the perfect moment to drop your bomb.

Then it starts all over again, on a loop, with constantly increasing difficulty. Just like any arcade game, really. The goal is to rack up as many points as possible.

Five years later, its adaptation on the Amiga still generates interest. 3D shooting games are still quite rare. Moreover, the main features of the original title are preserved: speed, manoeuvrability, some sound clips from the film, and … you’ll have seen it all within ten minutes!

As always, the arcade version is my favourite.
