This charming racing game puts the spotlight on classic American muscle cars. Combined with a bit of management (buying and selling cars and spare parts), it offers a high degree of customisation.
We’re in 1963. You start the game alone in your garage with a modest sum of money. On the floor lies a newspaper in which you can read the classified ads. It’s through this that you choose your first car! You’ll need to tinker with it a bit before cruising by the local diner and taking part in wild races, all in the hopes of winning money, upgrading your ride, and playing the show-off. Your ultimate goal: beat The King and woo the promotional queen before the end of summer (and the start of school!).
Technically, the racing part leaves a lot to be desired, but we forgive it—it’s primarily an atmosphere-driven game. In terms of stats, there are 25 different vehicles, 35 spare parts, and, uh … two races … including one straight-line 400-metre race!
Street Rod 2 (1991) significantly improves all aspects of the game, except for the driving, which remains heavy, even managing to lose in manoeuvrability.
Note: Press “Space” to change gears.
