Released for the Atari ST in 1991, this popular F1 racing game follows the classic “arcade” style, designed for those who aren’t fussed about realism. As for me, though, pit stops for repairs or refueling really grind my gears—guess it’s just not arcade enough for my tastes…
Vroom can be played with a controller or a mouse. In both cases, the driving combines handling and precision, while delivering a real sense of speed. A “competition” mode for experienced players offers much more demanding driving, qualifications, and rankings over an entire season. Unfortunately, only six circuits are represented.
A few details made me smile, like the opponents pulling maneuvers to avoid being overtaken, or the screen shaking when you get a little too close to the track’s edge…
A data disk was released in 1992, adding new circuits. In the following years, Vroom was re-released twice, under the titles: Vroom Multiplayer (1993) and simply F1 (1994). The latter included more races, a two-player split-screen mode, and a “turbo” option to go even faster!
