A brilliant mathematician, Hari Seldon, developed a revolutionary science called “psychohistory”, which allows for the prediction, in broad terms, of humanity’s future.

And what he predicts is not promising… The Galactic Empire, which has been prosperous for centuries, will collapse. This will be followed by a long period of darkness during which humanity will gradually lose its technology and engage in endless wars to fight over the remnants.

It is too late to prevent the fall of the Empire. Seldon knows this. All he can do is shorten this period of chaos by preparing a plan that spans several centuries. He decides to gather humanity’s knowledge in an encyclopedia and settles with a handful of scholars on a remote planet to build his foundation. It is said that there is a second foundation, somewhere, “at the other end of the galaxy”…

The Foundation saga thus spans several centuries. It depicts the fall of the Empire and the organisation of a new core intended to eventually become a new Galactic Empire, if Seldon’s plan proves true by then…

An exciting series told as a historical epic. The characters, however, are not very fleshed out.
