Like everyone else, I saw those teenage riots at the Fnac on TV after the release of each new Harry Potter book. You could see these herds of turkeys trampling over one another, rushing up escalators in the wrong direction to be the first to grab the precious tome. I imagine the person who knew the ending of the final volume before anyone else must have been seen as a big shot on the playground… An alpha turkey, perhaps?
As for me, I long remained in the camp of sceptics amid all the frenzy. I have to say, it wasn’t very enticing. Until I realised that we, the mockers, all had one thing in common: none of us had read the books.
The story, if it’s worth summarising, depicts life in a school of magic in England and the adventures of a group of students. The threat of an evil sorcerer (who must not be named) looms in the background, and each instalment (which spans roughly a school year) provides an opportunity for Harry and his friends to thwart one of his diabolical schemes.
It’s light, engaging, and a quick read. The ending is always unpredictable. It’s the kind of book that’s easy to read in its original language. Yes, there you go, for learning English. That’s a good excuse, isn’t it?
