A Game of Thrones is an incredibly rich fantasy saga. Set in a fictional world inspired by medieval Europe (the War of the Roses), different families battle for power. The reader is swept into court intrigues, knights’ jousts, and wars…

Unlike most fantasy books, magic and the traditional dragons, though present, are relegated to the background. What truly matters are the power dynamics between factions, politics, deceit, and betrayals. In each chapter, the narrator focuses on a main character, out of a dozen or so, good or bad, most often somewhere in between. The tone shifts, and events are seen from different perspectives.

What makes this series so compelling is the personalities of the characters and the web of smaller stories that intertwine to create a complex overarching plot. You can read these books several times and still discover details you missed. The character you’ve grown attached to might suddenly die from one page to the next. It’s grand, it’s clever, a true tale for adults.
