On the Amiga, by the mid-’90s, there was a rush to develop “first-person” 3D games. Alien Breed 3D was one of the early contenders and remains, in the end, one of the more convincing ones.
Despite what its title might suggest, it owes far more to Doom than to Alien Breed. Admittedly, it’s an eyesore (the resolution is painfully low), but it runs smoothly and offers more variety than Gloom.
I appreciated some nice touches like the sound of footsteps as you move, well-rendered explosions, and underwater segments. Bonus points for the configurable controls and the password system.
