A first person shooter, rudimentary and somewhat bland when compared to Doom, obviously.
Nevertheless, compared to what was available on Amiga at the time, I find the execution quite decent. I rather like the bizarre monster design and the unsettling (albeit subtle) soundtrack. Moreover, the the intro music reminds me of the Scanners. film score. If that doesn’t set the mood, I don’t know what will!
The cherry on top is that the game comes with a very well-made level editor and a save function (password system for the CD32 version, which I don’t recommend, by the way).
Now for the annoying bits!
First off, the control configuration is problematic, particularly for strafing. This can be remedied on an emulator: in the “Input” tab, I mapped the “Alt” buttons to the keyboard arrows. Thus, I can play with my mouse and keyboard as in modern games.
Yeah, I play with the arrow keys…
Secondly, from level 2 onwards, you spend your time falling into lava-filled pits, from which it’s impossible to escape without losing a life. For this reason, I suggest you do without the “infinite energy” mode…
Yeah, I play with cheat codes! What of it then? You talkin’ to me? Oh yeah?
One last complaint for the road: the weapon animations and “special effects” are truly wanting. For instance, I can’t recall witnessing a single explosion. Quite disappointing when you’re lugging around a bazooka!
