A very well-known platformer, but a bit overrated in my opinion.
Chuck Rock, the pot-bellied caveman, sets off to rescue his girlfriend from the clutches of his rival, the vile Gary Gritter. Along the way, he’ll face prehistoric creatures, knocking them out with belly bumps, kicks, or by throwing rocks at their faces.

The characters and the cartoonish backgrounds boast a certain style, but unfortunately, the animation leaves much to be desired. The same goes for the minimalist soundtrack. By the way, on the title screen, you can press space to swap the music for sound effects, which only have one real point of interest: the “hounga-bounga” the hero shouts at the start of each level (you can’t have both).

The game itself is rather conventional: most of the time, you just move forward, knocking out critters that go back and forth from left to right. It quickly becomes monotonous. Plus, there are no save points, so every time you lose a life, you must go through the level again.

The animated intro is funny. It would have been a welcome addition to see the same at the end instead of a still image. Oh well…
