The very late adaptation of a major Commodore 64 hit from 1984, itself inspired by the arcade game Battlezone (1980). You pilot a tank in a first-person view across a desolate wasteland dotted with metal pylons (which deflect your shots) while contending with flying saucers and homing missiles. Only one enemy—either a saucer or a missile—is on-screen at any given time, making Encounter feel more like a game of hide-and-seek than a pulse-pounding shooter, in my opinion. That said, it does run quickly—far faster than Battlezone.
The shooting phases are interrupted by high-speed slalom sections, where you navigate through fields of asteroids. These are equally fast-paced but incredibly frustrating, since a single collision sends you straight back to the start of the previous level.
