This is a truly original adventure game, both in its theme and its tone and presentation. You’re thrown into the final days of perestroika, surrounded by a realistic, gritty atmosphere tinged with dark humour.
The artwork is stunning, albeit lacking in animation (I’m particularly fond of the character portraits). The music has a Kraftwerk vibe. I like it too … for about five minutes.
As for the interface, it’s complex but clear enough to navigate without a manual. On top of that, the “intelligent” cursor usually pairs the right action to the selected object. It’s easy enough to get the hang of. Solving the case, though? That’s another matter entirely…
As in any adventure game, you’ll need to search everywhere, examine every object, and talk to everyone. Naturally, conducting interrogations is part of the job; in this respect, the extensive dialogues lend a certain depth to Cryo’s title.
The main criticism one might level at it is its linearity. Additionally, given the five floppies, a hard-drive installation is preferable—something made possible by WHDLoad, though it causes graphical corruption on my setup…
