This is a space opera (a sprawling sci-fi saga) built on a “pen-and-paper” RPG of the same name (think Dungeons & Dragons in space). You command a team of five adventurers in a richly detailed, open sci-fi universe. Like in Elite, you’re free to make a living however you see fit – by staying on the right side of the law … or not.
Of course, there’s a plot simmering in the background – some alien conspiracy aiming to overthrow the galactic empire. You might even get around to thwarting it, if you can spare the time between your main pursuits: hoarding cash, buying weapons, and gambling in casinos.
The character creation system is relatively complex. It goes beyond a stat-heavy character sheet, letting you craft a proper CV, complete with your faction, past experiences, and tailored skills. If that sounds like a chore (or if, like me, creating a save disk remains an unsolvable enigma), you can skip it entirely and play with pre-made characters instead…
