Here’s the conversion of a ridiculously cheesy arcade game (Taito, 1987), in the vein of Bubble Bobble. In fact, it was considered its sequel until the release of Bubble Symphony, aka Bubble Bobble 2 (arcade, 1994).
You control a little boy who can shoot rainbows and must climb vertically designed levels (one of which nods to Arkanoid) populated by nasty creatures – all while outrunning the rising tide.
The rainbow serves as both a formidable weapon and a handy tool for creating platforms to reach higher areas.
In 1990, Parasol Stars, the third instalment, came out, once again reimagining the gameplay mechanics.
And if you’re after a “retro-modern” take: check out Super Hiking League (2020).
