Barmy, frustrating, hilarious, infuriating, cult classic… All of that!
Rick Dangerous is a parody of Indiana Jones. Armed with a six-shooter, a stick and a bit of dynamite, he must escape from a network of tunnels and caves, infested with booby traps and populated by unsavoury characters. Rather perilous work, to say the least.

Indeed, it’s a game for masochists; because beneath its cartoon appearance and retro look, it conceals a veritable arsenal of traps of all kinds that will kill you in one hit!

It’s the sort where you need to do reconnaissance, take notes with a pencil on paper so as not to be caught out next time. Except you always get caught out a few metres further on! It’s maddening but you always go back. We’re masochistic, I tell you.

I should clarify that my gracious tolerance for this sort of punishing game is conditional upon two parameters: precise character control and a sustained pace, allowing us to restart at will. Rick, you pass. Willy too. Dirk and Dizzy, not in your wildest dreams!

If you’re looking for an updated variation, I’d suggest 1001 Spikes (2014).
