Against the backdrop of a family curse, you explore a wax museum in search of your possessed twin brother. The gloomy galleries contain portals that will transport you to other places, other times, where you will face evil spirits…

Waxworks bears a strong resemblance to Elvira (from the same creators). It’s a first-person horror game, featuring an original storyline and a simple, user-friendly interface. One might criticise the somewhat random combat (don’t bother trying to block blows, I think you just need to click like mad and reload a previous save if things go wrong). The real appeal lies in the exploration (graph paper and pencil are a must) and solving puzzles (well above average for this type of game). Of course, there’s a wealth of items to collect, including a variety of weapons—lovely!

The four themed worlds offer very different atmospheres: Ancient Egypt; London, at night, in the time of Jack the Ripper; a monster-filled mine; and a graveyard full of zombies. The game spans ten floppy disks, so it’s best to install it on your hard drive. If you know how, head to WHDLoad. If not, you’ll be better off downloading the PC version.
