Elvira needs your help to save her and recover a chest containing a powerful spell—the only thing capable of defeating the demon queen Emelda, whom Elvira accidentally awakened while attempting to redecorate her massive castle…

Her face—and, let’s be honest, her cleavage—probably ring a bell. Elvira is a star of American television, a sultry icon of horror films, and, for some reason, a complete unknown in France. This game is an adaptation of the eponymous late ’80s film (which, truth be told, isn’t nearly as bad as it looks).

You explore in first person through a chilling universe. The interface is straightforward: click objects to pick them up and use the arrows on the left to navigate. Dungeon crawling is interspersed with real time combat scenes, and, as in any self-respecting RPG, your character grows stronger with each victory. The experience is enhanced by immersive visuals (sometimes quite graphic) and digitised voices.

In the end, it’s a remarkable success—a rarity when cinema makes its way onto our computers. However, one aspect of the game might terrify you even more: its French localisation.

Looking for a modern heir? Why not try Fear and Hunger (2018).
