Following the gory adventure game, Elvira, the semi-celebrity with her … generous personality, lent her name to a more formulaic genre—a sort of bargain-bin First Samurai. Personally, I forgot about it almost immediately.
The game revolves around hopping back and forth, flinging projectiles across lavishly coloured yet monotonous levels in search of a key and then a door (and, lucky you, a bonus trip if you find the door first). A few power-ups try to crack the monotony, along with a merchant where you trade spells to open specific passages.
The character animation is decent, but it comes at the cost of responsiveness (try firing right after turning around). I’d also critique the sluggish pace, though that’s unfortunately par for the course on the Amiga. If nothing else, the game nails the sensation of walking in stilettos … or being stacked like a tank!
Press “Enter” to cast a spell and “S” to toggle between the (pitiful) sound effects and music.
If you’re stuck on a frozen purple screen at launch, it’s because you clicked during or just before the intro sequence instead of pressing the space bar. Some games are just sensitive like that…
