A quintessential Amiga title: stunning graphics, absolutely sublime music…

To give you an idea of how good the soundtrack is, I accidentally left it looping in Deliplayer for over an hour (the module lasts 1h12) without even noticing! Most tracks make my ears crackle after just five minutes.

In terms of “playability”, however, it’s a disaster. The same development team would later bring us Agony, and the experience is similar: initial “Wow!” quickly gives way to “Yawn”.

My main gripe with Unreal is the same as with Shadow of the Beast: a clunky, poorly animated protagonist, repetitive action… In truth, this game is better appreciated as a sophisticated tech demo or perhaps a piece of digital art, celebrated for its atmosphere.

The “action/platforming” sections alternate with 3D dragon-back shooting phases, which are visually impressive but once again confusing and repetitive. Dare I call it a precursor to Panzer Dragoon? Well, I just did.

For those brave enough to see it through, you’ll be treated to a cryptic “to be continued” teasing a sequel. As of today, we’re still waiting.
