Uridium was a cult classic on the Commodore 64, released in 1986. Uridium 2 isn’t so much a sequel as an enhanced remake.
You battle above a massive spaceship, destroy all its defenses, then land on it to blow it up. The screen scrolls horizontally in both directions, and at your chosen speed (in theory). The controls are particularly demanding: even the slightest contact with a projectile or enemy instantly costs you a life. Your ship can pivot 90 or 180 degrees, allowing you to weave between laser fire. Less amusing are the protrusions on some ship surfaces, which you’ll repeatedly smash into—with all the joy and cheer one might expect…
The Amiga adaptation brings numerous impressive visual effects, a few secondary weapons, and a radar at the bottom of the screen reminiscent of Defender. It also features a peculiar on-foot shooting phase in the reactor room between levels.
The game is fast-paced, challenging (though not as punishing as the original), and slightly frustrating due to limited visibility.
Avoid using autofire: holding down the button is essential for spinning and escaping end-of-level sequences.
A remake was released in 2018: Hyper Sentinel.
